Poor Oral Care Leads to Bad Breath...and Worse
Just as in animals, good oral health care is also extremely important for people as well. It helps to not only preserve our teeth, but it also can have a dramatic impact on our overall health. Recent research has found that people with periodontal disease are more likely to suffer from coronary artery disease compared to those people without periodontal disease.

Bad Breath (Halitosis)
Bad breath is just annoying, right? Maybe. But a lot of times it can be an indication of more serious problems including periodontal disease. Understanding what causes bad breath is instrumental in knowing how to help reduce or eliminate the odor.
So what is periodontal disease?
Also known as gum disease, periodontal disease is a bacterial infection of the gums, bone and periodontal ligament (the fibers that support and attach teeth to the jaw). Some of the common symptoms are:
- Swollen, red and/or tender gums
- Bleeding gums
- Constant bad breath
- Receding gums
- Loose teeth
When the gums become inflamed it has been noted that the diseased gums released high levels of inflammatory bacteria into the bloodstream. People with severe periodontal disease have shown higher levels of this type of bacteria in their bloodstream than healthier people. One theory is that oral bacteria can affect the heart when the bacteria enters the bloodstream. Since blood is constantly flowing through the heart it is one of the most susceptible organs.
There is still much research that needs to be done to fully understand the association between systemic diseases, bad breath and periodontal disease. But this evidence clearly shows that it is even more important to maintain a healthy, disease-free mouth and have regular dental checkups.
Even if you don't show signs of periodontal disease or even bad breath, don't wait until it happens. Start a good oral health routine today. Make it a daily habit to brush, floss, scrape and rinse. Use low abrasion toothpastes and a tongue scraper to keep your teeth clean and your tongue free from bad breath causing material. Floss daily to remove the food particles from between your teeth. And finally, use only an alcohol free mouthwash to eliminate bad breath (add additional protection to your teeth when using a fluoride mouthwash).
It's not just about keeping your teeth for a lifetime, but also keeping in good overall health.
