Dogs Fed Rich Levels of Antioxidants Learn New Tricks!
Antioxidants may help reverse the aging process, according to a University of Toronto Study. Antioxidants could prevent or slow down the rate at which brain cells deteriorate and to some extent improve mental clarity in aging animals, the study says (HealthScout.com). Researchers fed 10 and 11-year-old beagles either a normal diet or one supplemented with vitamins E and C. The dogs receiving antioxidants learned specific tasks in 14 to 24 days. Dogs on regular diets learned the tasks in 19 to 36 days. In another study, this one lasting 10 months, dogs learned to pick out different-sized balls from a set of three balls. Those with the enriched diet took 16 days to learn the task, while those on the regular diet took an average of 228 days to learn.
The improved performance may mean that antioxidants do more than just prevent further aging, according to the study. Antioxidants may even reverse damage that has already occurred. Results of the study were presented to a recent meeting of the Society for Neuroscience.
